Who has not heard the old saying "a man's home is his castle?" With crime rates on the rise at a record-setting pace, and criminals being released back on the street because of over-crowded jails and prisons, maybe you should consider building a moat around your ‘castle’ for personal security. This was the certainly the case in the Medieval days. Seriously, there are a few more modern personal tips that you can implement around your home to make it even safer than living in that castle surrounded by a moat.
For the purpose of this writing, we are going to assume that when you are not in the confines of your home, then you are traveling.
Home Personal Tip #1: Installation of a Home Camera System
Your objective should be to install as many cameras on the outside of your home as necessary, eliminating all blind spots, just as they do in prisons, banks, casinos and retail stores. To enhance your personal security, you want to be able to view anything and everything that enters the perimeter of your property. You want to able to view live, or review a tape to see who stole some of your personal property last night.
To be most effective, these cameras should be placed in a high position or attached to a tree. They can even be disguised to look like a pigeon, robin, or squirrel with kits designed to hide cameras. These kits are available in hundreds of different ‘disguises’, so you have options to choose those that are native to your area.
With new technology available today, some cameras are so small that they do not require much to remain hidden from view. By shopping and comparing features and pricing, you can decide which model will give you the best service within your budget.
Further, this tip #1 recommends including a camera system inside your home. This system's coverage should also not include any blind spots. They can monitor for unwanted intrusions, but also allows you to monitor other situations and activity while you are away from the castle.
Home Personal Tip #2: Extreme Caution Recommended
Develop a plan. Know how you are going to deal with intruders, whether it is the neighbor’s kid from next door that climbed the fence to retrieve his baseball, or the burglar who is lurking inside your home when you arrive. Remember, caution is the better part of valor, and it is recommended that you always first call the police rather than act on the situation yourself. Of course, the only exception to this rule is if you are literally forced to defend yourself.
Personal Tips #3– Traveling
For the most part, when we travel away from home, especially locally, we do so in our cars. Regardless the area you are in, once you return to your car, have approached your vehicle very cautiously and are inside, lock the doors. Once at your final destination and before you leave your vehicle, you want to scan the surrounding area for suspicious looking characters and situations. Since most of us now own one, always carry a cell phone with you. It is a good idea to know where the closest police station is located so you can drive right to it if you are being followed. Above all, be aware, be cautious and be safe.
