Tips to Pursuing A Career As A Personal Security Specialist

Frank Joseph

One of the fastest growing fields in the world is the personal industry. There are more and more demands to satisfy future needs for personal specialists, also called ‘bodyguards.’ In today’s world, an individual doesn't have to be a celebrity or a visiting dignitary to hire a personal specialist. More everyday people with ‘normal’ assets and wealth are hiring bodyguards to accompany themselves and their families in public. Moreover, many more celebrities are hiring bodyguards to protect them not only from personal physical harm, but from overly aggressive fans, not to mention from overzealous paparazzi.

Personal Specialist – The Changling

As a personal specialist, you are required to blend in with others in a variety of circumstances. You must be able to ‘blend into the woodwork’ in a formal dining environment one day and be overt, assertive, and intimidating in a rough street setting the next. Whether you are male or female, short or tall, small or large, you must be able to adapt to any circumstance on short notice. If this kind of drama and variety is appealing to you, and you have the basic background and experience, you might make an excellent personal specialist and should consider the possibility.

Personal Specialist – The Honest One

One requirement of a bodyguard in today's society is, quite frankly, the ability to pass a background check. Gone are the days when a rough-and-tough bodyguard with a criminal record could acquire a position as a high profile bodyguard. As an example, many of today's personal specialists are former police and military personnel with the highest degree of integrity. These individuals are trained to defuse a sticky situation without getting aggressive or violent, except as a last resort.

Though you don't necessarily have to be a former cop or soldier to be a personal specialist, you do have to have a clean record and high personal standards for honesty and integrity, as well as an ability to maintain your composure under pressure.

Personal Specialist – The Brave Soul

Working as a bodyguard is not for the faint of heart or the timid. In most other occupations, "taking one for the team" is an analogy, just a saying. In the personal business, it is pretty much an everyday fact of life. Almost every day as a bodyguard you will be required to put your own personal safety at risk so you can protect your client. If you don't believe you can or want meet this critical challenge, the personal industry will probably not be the job for you.

On the other hand, if you have the three top qualities of bravery, adaptability and integrity, coupled with background experience and training, you may be well suited to a career as a personal specialist.
