Weary Getting Out Of Debt?: Some Helpful Advice

L. B. James

For years, there have been late-night commercials about help getting out of fast. Now these commercials are appearing throughout the day! It is true that some of these companies in the market are legitimate in helping people find solutions. However, some of those companies are in it to just to make money for them. Unfortunately, for many people with high burdens, they have become so desperate that they will grasp at any opportunity, hoping they can get out of the dire predicaments they are in.

Could There Be Sharks Among us?

Payday loans are sharks to the poor and defenseless debtors of the world. Payday loan offices come under a variety of auspices, but, make no mistake about it. These companies are in business for one reason: to make money.

It has been only recently that federal, state, and local governments began to look at the offers of help getting out of that these scam companies are offering. Very often, these companies charge extremely high interest rates on even small debts, and require signing over the rights to property secured by a lien.

Unfortunately, this process really does very little for the person in debt. People often patronize these establishments when they are unable to get help from a legitimate source, such as a bank. The cycle continues until the debtor cannot pay the loan, and they are forced to forfeit their security. If the security for the loan was a car, they may be giving up their lone means of transportation.

Fortunately, many states have enacted legislation governing these companies. For example, in Florida caps the amount of interest that can be charged, how that interest is calculated, and offers the abused debtor some recourse to fight such unscrupulous practices.

What Can You Do If I Have Been ‘Bitten’?

First, you contact your local office of the Better Business Bureau. The BBB can help you get out of putting you in contact with the appropriate authorities who can help decide the proper course of action for you.

If you still do not feel that you are getting the help you need, you can search the internet for a variety of non-profit and government agencies that are designed to help people in getting out of debt. Additionally, they are often Legal Aid or consumer advocate clinics that offer free or low cost legal advice. Be aware, though, that certain test conditions of income and situation may have to be met in order to receive such aid.

The best advice on avoiding the sharks is to just simply not swim with them in the first place! There are other ways and means to successfully find help getting out of debt. There is not only help, but there is hope out there for those who seek to find it. Take a stand against them and regain the advantage from those who are preying on your misfortune or the misfortune of others.
